Glossa was created in 1992 after an idea of two brothers, Emilio and JosŽ Miguel Moreno. From the outset, their aim was to make a label for the benefit of music, and not music for the benefit of a label. They were convinced, and remain so, that musicians respond to creative freedom by giving their very best. The two brothers applied this philosophy to a small number of recordings of their own, made with the help of a few friends and in a quite an amateur way. But the results were astonishing, and the acceptance extraordinary. At the beginning of 1995, when Glossa had released just 5 CDs, Carlos CŽster, a versatile sound and design specialist, accepted the task of organizing the company and guiding it towards a healthy future. Preserving the ideas on which Glossa had been built, while also broadening its objectives to embrace formal experimentation and an interest in the context surrounding composition, performance and recording. In only five years, Glossa's catalogue has built up to over 60 titles. The company currently releases 2 new titles per month. New artists have been added to the Glossa family since it began: in addition to the two main pillars, JosŽ Miguel and Emilio Moreno, Glossa is now the main label for award-winning artists and groups, Patrick Cohen, Paolo Pandolfo, La Venexiana, Wilbert Hazelzet, Eric Hoeprich, Stevie Wishart, Pedro Estevan, Fabio Bonizzoni, the Orchestra of the Renaissance and, the cream of the crop, Frans BrŸggen and his Orchestra of the 18th Century who have chosen Glossa to co-produce all their new recordings, confirming the importance of Glossa as one of the most innovative, exquisite and forward-looking labels currently operating. More recently, the company have scooped HervŽ Niquet's renowned Le Concert Spirituel in an exclusive recording deal, the results of which will be seen in May 2001, with the release of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. State of the art sound, great performances of great repertoires, luxurious and innovative packaging, carefully chosen new artists and literary collaborators, and clear ideas about how to lead good music far into the new millennium are Glossa's strong points. Sieuwert Verster, manager of BrŸggen's Orchestra of the 18th Century and of The Grand Tour, their production house, has put it very clearly: ÇGlossa is the label of the futureÈ. x x |

pour l'Art 2001. Introduction to the new Glossa catalogue In recent times the music industry has started to undergo a number of radical changes. Electronic commerce not only means the gradual replacement of real stores with virtual ones, or at least a profound reorganization of the systems of distribution, but furthermore, thanks to the steady increase of bandwidth and the subsequent potential for enormous amounts of information to be electronically transferred in a short time, in the near future we will see the disappearance en masse of the physical product as such. At Glossa we cannot be impervious to these technological advances, and in fact as the year progresses we will add the option of buying some of our products directly from our Web site as well as offering a variety of downloads. Nevertheless, the philosophy that led us to establish Glossa in 1992 remains intact. In this sense, we believe we should stay well clear of concepts such as the blind acceptance of technological innovations, standardization or economies of scale, all of which are incompatible with what motivates us: the creation of unique works of art. Thus, we still consider that the beauty of the object is essential, and in Glossa we have been instrumental in the development of a way of seeing the disc as a «total cultural object», one that affords a quality cultural experience at all levels, including auditory, visual and even tactile. A Glossa disc cannot be broken down into a series of bits, and we know that this is what differentiates us. To achieve our goal we rely not only on an extraordinary array of artists, who without exception have remained loyal to our label from the moment of joining, but also on a group of essayists, translators, designers, engineers and leading producers who all together guarantee the making of an elite artistic object, both contemporary and timeless. Our objective for the year 2001 is to find the right balance between our profound respect for music, ideas, genres, the art of the past, and the amazing technological potential at our disposal. We hope that our enthusiastic quest will continue to provide moments of satisfaction for our ever growing number of friends. x x |
